The day that is known as Valentine’s Day has been around since 496AD. It is a day to celebrate love and relationships and to let that special somebody know how important they are. But amidst the joyfulness that springs from this day there are several dangers to be aware of.

Firstly, Christian dating is different from secular dating in many ways, the most important being the lack of sexual activity between the couple. Whilst mentioned numerous times in the Bible some young Christian couples decide that the principle of waiting until marriage to have sex does not apply to them. There are several good reasons to avoid this line of thinking including the bond created between two people because of sex and the rampant sexually transmitted diseases when sex is misused. So for Valentine’s Day 2010 resist the urge to place yourself and your loved one in a position where you will be sexually compromised.

Secondly, love does not mean infatuated feelings and actions. God should still be your rock regardless if you are partnered or if you are single. It is also important to ensure that family and friends continue to play a pivotal role in your life and your time is not spent exclusively on your significant other. Relationships do not exist in a vacuum.

Finally, redefine your relationship. God should be at the centre of your relationship. It is for His glory that you are together. Make sure you treat each other with the upmost respect as a brother or sister in Christ with all purity.

We live in a world where it is okay to be self-involved. However, if you want your relationship to stay strong it means placing someone else first. This means to treat them with purity, commitment and love. Avoid absolute devotion and passion as this leads to infatuation and sex. Stay grounded, stay Biblical for that is how you will stay together.
