In less than a month atheists will gather in Melbourne for the Global Atheist Convention. The line-up of speakers includes the prominent biologist Richard Dawkins as well as Peter Singer and comedians Catherine Deveny and Julian Morrow (The Chasers War on Everything) to name a few. The convention will take place over the weekend of the 12th-14th of March with an attached slogan reading "Atheism - Celebrate Reason" (in conjunction with the Atheist Foundation of Australia).
It is important for believers to know about this conference for many different reasons. Firstly the AFA now has the go ahead to run these "Celebrate Reason" placards on buses and trams around Melbourne from the start of March. This has occurred after an anti-discrimination claim was upheld in Tasmania. Interestingly we are described as a "politically/religious dysfunctional regime" on the AFA website. It is also important for Christians to note that it will become more likely that our faith will come under attack. This is a good thing, but something you must be prepared for and something that each of us must challenge ourselves. For our beliefs are not based on blind faith and lack of reason. Some books I would recommend to read would be I Don't Have Enough Faith To Be An Atheist by Norman L. Geisler, Frank Turek, and David Limbaugh and God's Undertaker: Has Science Buried God by John C. Lennox. Christians must not take this Global Atheist Convention lightly. There are a lot of Atheists that have no tolerance for Christian beliefs. Richard Dawkins, in his book The God Delusion spells it out like this "it is absolutely safe to say that if you meet somebody who claims not to believe in evolution, that person is ignorant, stupid or insane (or wicked, but I'd rather not consider that)". Whilst we should be loving to all people do not for one second believe that a lot of atheists deem that the world would be better off without religion. Also do not believe the lie that atheism provides a person with a more intellectual position. Finally, take heart. God's people have always been under fire through-out history and there is no reason to think we should be able to avoid the confrontation. There are many very strong reasons to have a faith in Christ in today's age and the fact that the atheists are stirring reminds us to remain on our guard and act in love. For in the end it is God who is our reason and the cornerstone of our faith.
