Resistance Thinking Culture

Culture is a term used to describe why humans act the way they do. The study of culture attempts to explain why certain behaviours have special significance for some humans, where as for others it is completely meaningless. Culture encompasses everything from watching television and surfing the web, to doing yoga and having pre-arranged marriages.

All of the human behaviours that make up a particular culture are founded on a certain set of ideas. For instance, Islamic women wear a hijab for modesty because of teahcings in the Hadith and many Christians wear a cross around their neck in rememberance of Christ. These are human behaviours that are founded on a very clear set of ideas. Ideas are expressed in human behaviours that make up a certain culture.

In this culture section you will find articles, news and reviews on an extrememly diverse range of topics that relate to culture: the media - TV, news, magazines, movies etc., other religions - Islam, Judaism, New Age, Buddhism, Hinduism etc., philosophy - postmodernism, existentialism, humanism, consumerism etc., popular culture, music, Christian culture - music, moviews etc., and a whole lot more!

Happy Mothers Day....and All Other Sorts of Things PDF
Thursday, 09 May 2013 21:50

Article by Cameron Spink

This Sunday we will be celebrating Mothers Day. It will be the 104th anniversary of the first occasion when Anna Jarvis decided to honour her deceased mother. Since then this day has undergone serious commercialisation at the hands of various companies who have profited from the extra sales of gifts and cards, as is their way.

This Mothers Day we get some other new attachments since its commencement. Popular US magazine The New Yorker has decided to go for a more “enlightened” take on Mothers Day on the cover of its latest magazine.

The Dilemma of the Mortal PDF

Article by Cameron Spink

When humanity was in its infancy the many came together on the plains of Shinar and said “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.” (Genesis 11:4 ESV). But God saw the wickedness and desires in these people's hearts and did the very thing they were afraid of, he dispersed them over the face of the whole earth.

This desire to be like God persists with us to this very day. While watching the new Iron Man film I was struck with just how much our media is saturated in presenting our heroes in a god-like sheen. This film features Tony Stark in his fourth outing (Iron Man 1 & 2 and The Avengers) and it is, far and away, the boldest. While he is certainly not fighting invading aliens, Stark has to deal with antagonists who seemingly can't be killed. Yet, as we go through this narrative from the eyes of Stark, we are given the impression that he too is impervious to death.

Durex Fundawear PDF
Monday, 22 April 2013 14:26

Article by Cameron Spink

Durex has never been a conservative sort of company. After all they are in the market of selling condoms which are primarily used to stop pregnancy or the spreading of sexually transmitted diseases. These two so-called “issues” are most likely a concerns for people who are having sex out of wedlock and want the opportunity for sex “without strings” to remain open.

As Durex cater for such a crowd it is not surprising that they have created a product that pushes the Disturbing level up to Extreme. Called Fundawear this product is a combination of vibrating underwear with a mobile app. Basically this product allows for the sensation of being touched on intimate parts of the human anatomy by someone who can be any distance from you provided they have mobile reception.

It is concerning that, like many innovating technologies (and I'm not saying this is break-through by any means), one of the first things it is marketed for is the human drive for sex. Despite the internet being useful on so many different levels it has quickly become predominantly used as a medium to transfer pornography. When progress occurred in robotics one of the first ways it was available for general consumption was, you guessed it, sex dolls. Of course, this is not a hard and fast rule, however, it does seem that whenever new technology comes along it is quickly implemented in the sale of sex.

In this case the ability to use touch over long distances is useful in a variety of different ways. Particularly if it is as simple as using an app on your phone. Certainly there should be concerns with some uses of this technology, but it is promising for the most part. The ability to use touch-sensitive materials over long distances (even in only it's early stages) has quickly become a product available for sex by Durex (and the awkward scene of an unfunny comedy movie).

Like so many other products that centre on sex little thought is given as to why these products should exist in the first place. Instead we are reminded that businesses like Durex are a money-making company that will invariably throw morality and good conscience away for the right price.

Here's a great article by Miranda Devine on the heartache and hurt that comes from the popular "hooking up" culture.

The zipless f... has become the norm according to a new book, The End of Sex
Miranda Devine, 8th April 2013

"In a new book, The End of Sex -- How Hookup Culture Is Leaving a Generation Unhappy, Sexually Unfulfilled, and Confused About Intimacy, Donna Freitas has compiled eight years of research into a revealing exposition of Gen Y life.

"Amid the seemingly endless partying . . . lies a thick layer of melancholy, insecurity and isolation that no one can seem to shake.

College students have perfected an air of bravado about hookup culture though a great many of them wish for a world of romance and dating.''

Among her most striking findings from American college campuses is that 41 per cent of students "expressed sadness or even despair about hooking up.

“Bright Young Things” and the Onslaught of Sexuality PDF

Article by Cameron Spink

There's much to be said about the chequered history of Victoria's Secret toeing the line. It seems that this underwear and lingerie company has prided itself in flaunting outfits and undergarments that are as “non-conservative” as allowed at any given time. No doubt it's target audience (young adult women) appreciates the company's disdain for modest options when it comes to the way women dress.

Unfortunately for Victoria's Secret it may have stumbled into a little bit of a problem. You see, one of it's new lines of clothing - “Bright Young Things” seems to be targeted towards tween girls (ages 8-12 years old) which has upset a fair few parents who believe that the company has no business aiming their products at girls who do not need to be influenced by highly-sexualised outfits. For example some of the underwear bottoms had phrases like “Call Me” and “Feeling Lucky?” printed on them.

25 Signs American Women Are Being Destroyed By The Sexual Revolution And Our Promiscuous Culture PDF

An excellent list that should be read carefully. Promiscuity comes at a price.

25 Signs American Women Are Being Destroyed By The Sexual Revolution And Our Promiscuous Culture

Michael Snyder, January 22nd 2013

"Has the sexual revolution been good for American women?  Not at all.  In fact, when you look at the facts it becomes clear that the sexual revolution has been an absolute disaster for American women.

In the United States today, men have been trained to primarily view women as sex objects, and our culture has become exceedingly promiscuous.

As a result, the United States leads the world in teen pregnancy, there are 19 million new STD infections every single year, more than half of all children born to women under the age of 30 are being born out of wedlock and we are witnessing the systematic breakdown of the family unit in America.

And yet anyone that tries to teach our young women that they should dress modestly and keep themselves pure for marriage is severely criticized.  Well, if all Americans actually did keep themselves pure until marriage, we wouldn’t have nearly the problems with STDs, teen pregnancy and abortion that we do today.

The consequences of teaching our young women that they should be “free” to run around and sleep with a whole bunch of different men have been dramatic.

The following are 25 signs that American women are being destroyed by the sexual revolution and our promiscuous culture…
