I was struck today by how different Christians are. We do not agree that R-rated games should be allowed (unlike 91% of the population), we do not agree with same-sex marriages nor do we prescribe to the idea that a secular society is the way to go. This reminded me of the commandment by Jesus in John 17 to be "in the world but not of the world". We are called to be different, we are to "shine as stars" (Philippians 2:15). Now for many people observing us this is seen as incredibly arrogant. But it remains our call to persevere even in the face of stark opposition.
For some this makes us dangerous. We are believed to be fundamentalists who would put the Word of God in front of the law as laid down by parliament. However, we are commanded by Jesus to "render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s" (Mark 12:17). Christians need a very strong reason to disobey the laws of the country they live in. But this does not hinder us from disputing any law we believe is unbiblical. Furthermore, if Christians were acting in a way that prescribes to Jesus' teachings them we would have to love our neighbour as ourselves (Mark 12:31). Far from making us dangerous this makes a Christian someone who is predictable and loving. We are called to be different, we are called to love others and we are called to remain humble. For Jesus had every right to arrogance yet He humbled Himself. So when faced with any issue that you don't agree with remember to act in love, regardless of who you believe has the right opinion. For this is how Christians are different, we respect the ones who do not agree with us. Be encouraged. God is working in this country and even as we face times of trial we must remain steadfast to the goal.
