Reports have littered news websites that Noah's Ark, mentioned in Genesis, has been found on one of the peak's of Mount Ararat in Turkey. This is encouraging for Christians as it provides us with some evidence confirming the biblical story. This discovery can have great effect confirming the historical integrity of the Bible to the world.

This, however, should be unnecessary for already present Christians. Having a faith is about something more than a decision based on the physical evidence in front of us. We are Christians because of God's grace which is not dependent on proof.

Richard Dawkins makes a good point. You cannot disregard some evidence while allowing some that confirms your own position. The finding of the Ark is neither essential to confirm the Old Testament nor is it much use to establish the truth for someone. We believe because God sought us out and we cannot expect anyone to change their world view because of the evidence. That is a position for atheists and not for Christians.

The significance of the Ark transcends its physical form and goes back to God's plan for humanity and His compassion. The world was filled with many evils at the time God commanded Noah to build an Ark. Instead of destroying all of humanity for their sins God, in His great mercy, provided us with a way we could be saved.

This theme of redemption is eerily mirrored in the new testament figure of Jesus. His life provided us a method to be saved from non-existence. This is why I am a Christian. The evidence I rely upon goes beyond material and to the core of humanity. Because we are made in His likeness.

So Richard Dawkins you can have your evolutionary theory, your philosophical evidence and even the remnants of the Ark. The point of existence cannot be found in the physical but rather in the understanding that we are God's creation and through His Son we are saved by the rising waters of our sin that attempts to consume us. All the Ark does is merely point us to the message of the gospel.
