The Gambling Spirit

Sport does strange things to men. The World Cup has only been on for a fortnight but all of a sudden one of my friends decided he’d put some money on one of the games. The Brazil v Korea DPR game to be exact. And the amount he put on Brazil to win: $800. It took sixty-eight minutes of stressing but finally Brazil were on the board and my friend won the bet. He made $80 off the bet.

This is how most gambling addictions start, with a win. Perhaps were an amateur gambler to lose it would dissuade them from continuing. Anyway, my friend placed another bet on a “sure thing”. And he won $120. So he continued and placed $300 on Germany to beat Serbia. It made sense didn’t it? Germany had beaten Australia 4-0, Serbia had only managed to draw with Ghana. The thing about soccer is it is a very volatile sport. With such low scores all it takes is one incident to change a match. The incident in this game was the German’s losing their key striker to a red card. In AFL if you lose a player for the match you’ll cope and do more interchange rotations. In soccer losing a player makes a win very unlikely.

Movie Review: Animal Kingdom

While Animal Kingdom is basically devoid of morality it does display a great insight into the humanity of man. Animal Kingdom tackles human nature at its barest and the result is a gritty movie that ticks all the right boxes.

As a critic of Australian films Animal Kingdom is a breath of fresh air. The plot and characters of the movie are based on real-life people and events but it takes a cinematic approach with the sort of attitude “just because we can’t confirm it happened, doesn’t mean it didn’t”. Much of the drama of this film centres around historical speculation and, as such, this movie can only be treated as a movie. Despite this, Animal Kingdom offers diverse characters in the Melbourne gangland jungles in a movie not dissimilar to The Departed.

Denying Our Nature

Another celebrity has come out this week in regards to their sexual orientation. This time it is Anna Paquin, the child prodigy, who won an Oscar at the age of eleven. She made public that she was bisexual to help the campaign “Give A Damn”.

The chief purpose of this campaign, according to their own website, is for “everyone who cares about gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender equality”. Equality is becoming a dangerous fad that even some Christians believe and are screaming for. And to some extent this could be justified. After all God is love isn't He? And He loves everyone equally? While this is indeed correct this logic is then pushed to the point “So if God loves every man, woman and child shouldn't he tolerate their sins”?

In recent years there have been many attempts to write theological papers endorsing homosexuality. None have come close to actually doing so.

One such paper, which we have written with concern about in the past, is by Keith Dyer, a lecturer in New Testament Studies at Whitley Baptist Theological College in Melbourne.

We are pleased to say that a very sound theological rebuttal of Dr Dyer's paper has now been written by Murray Campbell(Senior Pastor at Mentone Baptist Church) and Dan King(an elder at Mentone Baptist Church). Click here to go to their excellent article.

RALPH Magazine, the Australian monthly men’s magazine, has announced next month’s issue will be their last. This is because of a decline of purchaser’s which the magazine attributes to the “changing tastes of younger readers”.

RALPH has been in publication since August 1997 and catered for the adolescent lad specifically with significant amounts of finely clad woman through-out the magazine.

While it is encouraging to see this decline in interest it is not all good news. It is not that men have stopped indulging in their selfish desires of “adventure, sport, fashion, travel, music, boys toys, beautiful women, or life's essential how-tos” it is merely that they have other options as to where to fulfil their yearnings.
