Yet another story about a Christian told to "shut up" about what Christianity says about homosexuality. This time it is Jennifer Keeton in Georgia, USA. We are lucky to live in a country where our liberties aren't being as imposed on. Mind you we aren't far behind.

Lawsuit Claims College Ordered Student to Alter Religious Views on Homosexuality, Or Be Dismissed
Fox News, Thursday July 29th

"A graduate student in Georgia is suing her university after she was told she must undergo a remediation program due to her beliefs on homosexuality and transgendered persons.

The student, Jennifer Keeton, 24, has been pursuing a master's degree in school counseling at Augusta State University since 2009, but school officials have informed her that she'll be dismissed from the program unless she alters her "central religious beliefs on human nature and conduct," according to a civil complaint filed last week.

"[Augusta State University] faculty have promised to expel Miss Keeton from the graduate Counselor Education Program not because of poor academic showing or demonstrated deficiencies in clinical performance, but simply because she has communicated both inside and outside the classroom that she holds to Christian ethical convictions on matters of human sexuality and gender identity," the 43-page lawsuit reads...."

Article by Cameron Spink

It was reported in The Advertiser today that Family First approached the Australian Sex Party in an attempt to gain preference votes. I find it extremely unlikely that Family First would approach the Australian Sex Party as stated in the article. More likely Fiona Patten (Australian Sex Party's president) was lying through her teeth.

Let's examine the facts. Family First prescribes to the idea of a nuclear family and its policy in regards to abortion is to promote all beings, from conception. The Australian Sex Party, in contrast, campaigns for abortions, same-sex marriages, legal prostitution and the validity of pornography. If, indeed, a political party could be less family-orientated I couldn't conceive of one.

Fiona Patten describes Family First in the article as being the “worst aspects of conservative Australia”. If Family First’s policies and agenda’s can be described as the “worst aspects” of anything I’d hate to think what abortions, prostitutions and pornography could be described as.

Thankfully, Fiona Patten was most likely telling us this for a publicity stunt to gain media attention. Family First has nothing to gain from accepting preference votes from a party and everything to lose in reputation. Unfortunate that I must add to the attention, however, the claims from the Australian Sex Party must be refuted. While I do not share all the views of Family First the idea of them getting into bed with the Australian Sex Party is abhorrent.

Movie Review: Inception
Wednesday, 28 July 2010

Article by Cameron Spink

It took me two sittings to really gain an appreciation for Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece. Where The Dark Knight contained some logical fallacies that left the viewer bewildered even upon a second watch Inception has no such flaws. While the observer is asked to take in a reality that is somewhat confusing at no stage does it push through the limits that are created within the movie itself. Instead if one were to accept the original premise, namely that dreams can be invaded, then every step in the story thereafter is entirely plausible. It is with this complexity that Nolan weaves what I must deem the most complete film I have ever viewed.

On Expository Preaching
Tuesday, 27 July 2010

Bill Muehlenberg challenges us to consider the way we are taught from our pastor. He states there should be much more expository preaching (i.e.concentration upon a text) and less topical preaching (i.e. concentrating on an idea). For young adults and growing Christians it is important to consider how we are receiving God's Word.

Article by Bill Muehlenberg

"This article is somewhat restrictive. First, it is obviously for believers only. But second, most believers may not even be aware of what expository preaching is. This is because sadly most contemporary churches do not offer regular expository preaching.

I would guess that perhaps 95 per cent of churches (and here I refer to Bible-believing evangelical churches) do not engage in such preaching. Most simply offer sermons on various issues or topics. This is known as topical preaching. In contrast to expository preaching, where the text is central, in topical preaching a particular theme is emphasised.

Celebrity Obsession
Tuesday, 27 July 2010

A recent article appearing on Relevant Magazine's website is well worth reading. It offers some answers to the reason why we all get so engrossed in celebrity figures.

The Insidious Cult of Celebrity
Relevant Magazine, Ben McCracken

"Why do we worship the people we see in our culture?
It isn’t hard to see that our world is utterly smitten with celebrity: the concept, the people, when TMZ is a TV show, when “breaking news” of some plane crash in Africa gets equal billing with “breaking news” of Lindsay Lohan’s jail sentencing; or when the death of Michael Jackson captures cable news for, well, almost a year ... We are saturated with celebrity, to an arguably dangerous degree. It might do us some good, then, to consider the issue on a deeper level. What is the meaning and cultural impact of celebrity, and how should Christians respond?

An article on Liberal candidate David Barker presented very worrying news for Christians in politics. The article condemned Mr Barker for having "extremist" views in reference to his Christian faith. It seems we are pulling closer to a stage in our society where we cannot hold any views that are not secular.

Revealed: Liberal candidate David Barker's anti-Muslim campaign
The Sunday Telegraph, Sunday July 25th

"A Liberal candidate has been sprung posting anti-Islamic entries on Facebook and has written to church leaders asking for their support against his "strong Moslem" Labor opponent.

The Sunday Telegraph can reveal that Liberal Party officials have forced David Barker, a self-described "man of strong Christian faith", to shut down his Facebook account after he accused Labor of bringing the nation "closer to the hands of a Muslim country".

"I am going to win this seat. I claim it as mine and when I get in I will give my votes all of them to God who is on the side of the Liberal Right," Mr Barker, the candidate for the western Sydney seat of Chifley, says in one entry.
