Resistance Thinking Society

'Society' is a term used to describe a grouping of individuals and outlines the structures employed to ensure that the individuals within a society relate to each other in an appropriate fashion. Different societies may have distinctive cultural behaviours and different institutions. In this society section you will find news, articles and reviews that relate to Australian society, or more specifically, individuals who live in Australia.

Topics in this section will cover: science and technology - stem cell research, IVF, cloning, intelligent design, evolution etc.; politics - ideologies (communism, anarchism, totalitarianism, capitalism etc.), state and federal politics, the free market, the United Nations etc.; sociology - globalisation, prisons, welfare, government; environment - global warming, alternative energy etc.; and moral issues - poverty, homosexuality, euthanasia, abortion etc.

The role of the Christian within society is to stand for truth, for justice and most importantly, to represent God's agenda on the earth. As the Resistance Thinking journey continues, our aim is to stimulate engaging dialogue exploring the complexities of how followers of Jesus should engage with society in our day and age.

PhD student, David Levy, makes this disturbing prediction in his recent thesis.

Sex with robots 'not far away'
The Australian, 13 October 2007
HUMANS will be marrying robots by 2050 and having sex with them not long after, an artificial intelligence researcher has claimed. Netherlands university student David Levy, who recently completed his PhD on the subject of human-robot relationships, told LiveScience that robots will become so human-like in appearance, function and personality that many people will fall in love with them, have sex with them and even marry them.

"At first, sex with robots might be considered geeky, but once you have a story like 'I had sex with a robot and it was great!' appear in a magazine like Cosmo, I'd expect many people to jump on the bandwagon," he said.

The rape epidemic at the heart of Congo's darkness
The Age, October 8, 2007
Women are being systematically attacked on a horrifying scale in the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire), where large regions remain lawless. Denis Mukwege, a Congolese gynaecologist, cannot bear to listen to the stories his patients tell him any more.

Every day, 10 new women and girls who have been raped show up at his hospital. Many have been so sadistically attacked that their reproductive and digestive systems are beyond repair. "We don't know why these rapes are happening, but one thing is clear," said Dr Mukwege, who works in South Kivu province, the epicentre of Congo's rape epidemic: "They are done to destroy women."

Live-in couples may end up being single forever PDF
Tuesday, 09 October 2007 00:36
Research confirms what we have known for a while, that cohabitation is not a replacement of marriage, nor does it provide the security co-habitees are searching for.

Live-in couples may end up being single forever
Sydney Morning Herald, Adele Horin, October 1, 2007
MEN and women who start to live together too early in their relationship risk wasting years and ending up single, a family researcher says. Ruth Weston, the principal research fellow at the Australian Institute of Family Studies, said many young people thought moving in together was "a fun thing to do".

They believed they would take "each day as it comes", Ms Weston said. But often they lingered for years in an unsuitable relationship. When they eventually split, it might take them a long time to find a new partner, and for the woman, the chance of having children might be lost.

Nelson Youth Aid officer Constable Kathy Pomfrett said that while most teenagers used the site safely and like a chatroom, a growing number were using it to trade in sexual favours. The website lets users build their own home page, upload photographs and communicate with other members.

Troops open fire in Rangoon reprisal PDF

A report on the awful situation in Burma as peaceful monk protesters are received with violence and ruthlessness.

Troops open fire in Rangoon reprisal
The Age, Aung Hla Tun, September 28, 2007
TROOPS cleared protesters from the streets of Rangoon yesterday, giving them 10 minutes to leave or be shot as Burma's junta intensified a two-day crackdown on the largest uprising in 20 years. At least nine people were killed, state television said, on a day when far fewer protesters took to the streets after soldiers raided monasteries in the middle of the night and rounded up hundreds of the monks who had been leading them.

One of dead was a Japanese photographer, shot when soldiers cleared the area near Sule Pagoda — a city-centre focus of the protests — as loudspeakers blared out warnings, ominous reminders of the ruthless crushing of a 1988 uprising.
