Friday, 31 December 2010

The roads are a treacherous place for the young. Even when you take away things like speeding, drinking or dangerous driving the road can still be fatal. Today we have the heartrenching story of Mitchell Brennan who lost control of his car for a split second and he was lost to his family forever. The grief of this mother is moving and one would never want to subject their parents to the pain she is feeling.

A split second that can shatter lives
Herald Sun, December 31 2010

"It was 11.15am when pelting rain broke the brilliant sunshine.

Mitchell was making his way from Narre Warren South home to Cranbourne.

He knew the road intimately.

At 11.25am, on The Boulevard, he lost control of his car, just houses away from his sister's place.

The sisters and his mother - all nurses, rushed to the Alfred.

"At first when we went in, we didn't know how bad it was," Mrs Brennan said.

"He didn't have a mark on him, he had a black eye and his head was quite swollen.

"You just feel numb.

"As a mother you don't want to understand as a medical person you understand only too well."

She said time stood still when they heard the news.

"The doctor came out and said he had suffered major brain damage," she said.

"That his injuries weren't sustainable for life."

Mitchell died on December 3 at 12 minutes past midnight.

His family, who have already been through so much, want Victorians to know how much it hurts.

"He wasn't a hoon. He wasn't drinking. He wasn't texting. He wasn't talking on his phone," Mrs Brennan said.

"The car is a lethal weapon, kids they just get in and they don't' realize, how do you get through to them?

"Just because you are a good driver, does not mean other people are, or that the conditions won't change so quickly.

"Something can happen in a split second."..."
