Julia Gillard, the deputy Prime Minister of Australia, describes herself as a shy woman who has to put on armour to battle it out in the political arena. Now it is reported that this “shy” woman is vying for role of Prime Minister.
Gillard has had ties with Socialist groups through-out her adult life and is still a professing member of the Australian Fabian Society (a left-wing socialist group). Past Australian Labor Party members such as Gough Whitlam, Bob Hawke and Paul Keating being involved in the Fabian Society make it unsurprising that present members of the ALP would be involved in such a group. Despite this it is important to acknowledge that Julia Gillard is heavily influenced by this group’s philosophy, which in turn has some communist roots.
Gillard’s comments last month about Abbott’s advice on virginity reveal her feminist side. Regardless of the quality of the advice Gillard stamps her foot and says “we don’t want to be told what to do”. Not only does this blatantly miss the point of Abbott’s comments but it also shows an underwhelming ethical standard that Christians should be concerned about. If this is to be the most influential person in Australian politics then we have something to worry about.
Gillard’s controversial testing and publishing of school comparisons emphasises a lack of understanding about what the Australian school system needs. Gillard’s school rating system does provide schools with a progressive standard but it also forces competition into schools and encourages parents spending more money to send children further distances to schools that perform better than those locally.
Now Gillard remains perched in the wings, waiting for opportunity to arise. While she has remained inconspicuous for substantial parts of her political career she cannot hide her rise to power any more. Love her or hate her she is a political figure both resplendent and influential. Merely beware the dark side of the moon.
