The Death of Fear

Above all else Carl Williams inspired fear in others. Described as the “gangland king-pin” he was widely known to be a key player in many of the Melbourne gangland killings.
The life of Carl Williams was one of prestige. He flaunted the law and held immense power in his grasp. However, despite the power he perceived he had Carl Williams, in the end, could not save himself. You see money and power cannot help you cheat death. Williams’ decisions in life landed him in jail and ultimately caused his death. Life is a futile thing, as the cliché states “nobody gets out alive”. Carl Williams had one life that was squandered by him. He left broken lives and dejected families (including his own).
Important lessons should be learnt from the example of Carl Williams. His money didn’t delay his death, his power couldn’t save his life and his reputation ultimately condemned him. There are consequences for your worldly decisions and life is precious so make those choices count!
What is more, the Herald Sun had a poll in today’s paper asking whether readers would mourn Carl Williams. The overwhelming majority said they would not. I must be in the minority because I mourn Carl Williams. I mourn the hurt he caused, I mourn the life he lived and I mourn a soul condemned.
Sometimes, we place those who we deem as especially evil in the corner and justify our behaviours as incomparable to their misdeeds. But when I ponder the life of Carl Williams I am reminded of the sin I was born into. When I look at Williams I see the filthiness that God sees when He looks at me and it is only by His power that I am clean in His sight.
It is easy for us to condemn but at the end of his life only one opinion really matters to Carl Williams. I mourn because more people are being led away from Jesus, because Carl Williams reflects my own sinful desires and because the influence Williams had in life does not grant him an extra chance before the Almighty!
