The term "modern family" has risen to prominence partly on the back of the popular television show and partly because it is the progressive's triumphant sneer at the ideals of the conservative.

While the conservative in me does not really care about such an attempt to incite a response the Christian part of me mourns for the principles of a "traditional family".

So it brought me great apprehension when Annette Bening was awarded the Golden Globe for Best Actress and is one of the favourites for the same award at the Oscars for her role in the small film The Kids Are All Right.

Now I have not seen the movie and, as such, I cannot say how well she plays her role. Perhaps she deserves the award she has been given. However, the role that she portrays is that of a woman in a lesbian "marriage" relationship with Julianne Moore's character. While both female lead performances are being applauded there is great cause for concern over the characters being in a sexually immoral relationship. Of course, this is never mentioned by the regular movie critic because it would not be politically correct.

The family depicted in this movie is a mess. With two female parents the children to realize that they are missing a father figure. Hence, they go in search for their father, who subsequently has an affair with one of their mothers. This is a great indication of the fuzziness that occupies the non-biblical family.

The film is directed by Lisa Cholodenko who is an active lesbian so it is probably no wonder that she has created a film with significant liberal spin. The film ends with the suggestion that love is the only factor that is required in marriage. But, with such a title, there is an irony to a film presenting for very self-involved characters. This might make them more life-like but it does not make them good examples. In fact, all the lead characters in this movie are unhappy with some aspect of their lives. Such, it would seem, is the curse of being part of the "modern family".

Another example of the "modern family" comes in the form of Nicole Kidman's new baby, who was born from a surrogate. It seems that when the idea of "modern family" the best interests of the children are left by the wayside. There are so many different ethical issues with surrogacy that make it an inappropriate parenting choice. Take, for instance, the exploitation of women in the surrogacy industry (Melinda Tankard Reist: The Australian). Or the fact that it makes children accessories (Miranda Devine: Herald Sun).

When it comes to the "modern family" the kids are not all right and are sacrificed to the selfish desires of their parents and to the push of the progressives. So why are we celebrating this title?
